First-Half Goals Help Women's Soccer Continue Ivy Winning Ways
October 13, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- A pair of first-half goals helped the Princeton women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Columbia Saturday on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium, moving the Tigers to 6-4-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the Ivy League.
"It wasn't our prettiest game, but it's great to be in the position we are in the Ivy League," junior Lisa Chinn said.
Princeton began the scoring in the 37th minute. After Marci Pasenello was fouled in the 18-yard box, Diana Matheson took the penalty kick and tucked it in the right post for a 1-0 lead. Matheson made it 12 points in the last three games by assisting on Princeton's second goal. Taking a corner kick with the final seconds of the first half ticking away, Matheson took a pass back toward the corner from Libby van Beuren and fired at the goal, hitting the far post. Marissa Sampias was there to collect the Matheson miss and knock it in.
"I'm very pleased with the shutout," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford of a team that has allowed only one goal in 470 minutes at home this season. "Maren (Dale) had a great game in the net and Libby and Diana did a great job making a heady play on the second goal."
The Tigers outshot Columbia 13-8, including 8-2 in the first half, as Princeton's Maren Dale and Columbia's Allison Vespa each made one save.
"Columbia kept the pressure on us for 90 minutes," Shackford said. "They battled the whole time and they looked to disrupt our possession."
The 3-0 Ivy start is Princeton's eighth in 28 seasons of varsity soccer with five such starts coming since 2000. Princeton will visit Lehigh for a non-conference tilt Wednesday at 7 p.m. before continuing the league schedule at Harvard Saturday.
