PSU's James Wins Singles Title, Columbia Duo Takes Doubles Title At Wilson/ITA Northeast Regional
October 23, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Penn State's Michael James and the Columbia doubles team of Bogden Borta and Justin Chow each had dominating finals performances on the way to titles at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Northeast Regional Men's Tennis Championships Tuesday at Jadwin Gym.
James, the tournament's top seed, defeated Harvard's Dan Nguyen, the No. 9 seed, by scores of 6-1 and 6-0 in Tuesday afternoon's singles final. The Penn State senior lost just one set in the tournament, in a quarterfinal win over No. 8 seed Mark Clemente from Columbia.
Borta and Chow, the No. 7 seeds in the doubles draw, took charge quickly against the unseeded team of Ryan Gormley and Brendan Lynch from Penn State and won the match 8-1 after a final ace by Borta.
In Tuesday morning's singles semifinals, Princeton's Peter Capkovic, the No. 2 seed, could not recover from a slow start and lost to Nguyen by scores of 6-0 and 7-5. James took on Dartmouth's Mark Brodie, the 12th seed, and survived a key break point in the second set on the way to a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Both James and Nguyen, as well as the Columbia team of Bogden and Borta, advance to the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships to be held Nov. 1-4 at the Racquet Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ohio.
