Princeton Swim Teams Defeat Oakland In Season Openers

The Princeton swimming & diving teams opened their 2007-08 seasons with victories over Oakland University on Friday night at DeNunzio Pool. The Princeton men defeated the Grizzlies by a score of 178-122, while the Tigers women earned a 160-133 win.
Both the Princeton men and women won nine events apiece in the sweep.
The men had double winners in both Pat Biggs and Mike Carter. Biggs won the 1000 free in 9:28.21 and the 500 free in 4:36.36. While he excelled in the distance events, teammate Mike Carter dominated the sprints. He won the 50 free in 21.18 and the 100 free in 46.07. The final free event, the 200, also belonged to Princeton, as Will Schaffer took first in 1:41.99. Dan Eckel won the 200 fly in 1:49.23, Doug Lennox claimed the 100 fly in 50.23 and Chris Quemana won the 200 IM in 1:53.11. Daniel Dickerson made sure Princeton claimed a diving win as well; he edged out Mike Papageorge on the three-meter board with 300.37 points.
For the women, Lisa Hamming led the way with a pair of wins. She opened the individual events with a win in the 400 IM (4:28.72) and added a victory in the 200 breast (2:24.20). Senior teammate Ellen Gray won the 500 free in 4:56.30, while returning members of the 2007 Ivy championship team Courtney Kilkuts (100 breast, 1:04.07), Monika Friedman (200 fly, 2:06.56) and Justina DiFazio (100 free, 52.36) also claimed wins. Head coach Susan Teeter also saw two newcomes pick up wins in their collegiate debuts. Ming Ong took the 200 free in 1:52.38, while Megan Waters won the 50 free in 24.06. The 200 medley relay team of Meredith Monroe, Kilkuts, DiFazio and Waters opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:45.77.
The Princeton women return to action next weekend in a dual meet at Penn, while the Tiger men will swim against both the Quakers and Cornell in Philadelphia next Friday.
