Men's Swimming Moves To 3-0 With Sweep Of Penn, Cornell
November 16, 2007 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Double-winners Will Schaffer, Doug Lennox and Mike Papageorge led the Princeton men's swimming and diving team to an EISL-opening sweep of Penn and Cornell Friday night in Philadelphia. Princeton, which won 11 of the 16 events in the tri-meet, defeated Cornell 199-101 and Penn 214.5-85.5.
The two-time defending EISL champs got their first win from Pat Biggs, who won the 1000 free in 9:31.66. Biggs' attempt at a second win came up just short, as teammate Robert Griest won the 500 free in 4:36.27.
Schaffer picked up Princeton's first double win. He followed Biggs' victory with a win in the 100 breast (58.90), and he came back with another victorious effort in the 200 breast (2:08.64). Schaffer actually had a shot at a triple victory, but he fell less than two seconds behind freshman teammate Colin Hanna in the 200 IM. Hanna, one member of the strong Princeton Class of 2011, won the event in 1:54.72.
Lennox swept a pair of 100 events. He took the 100 free in 46.25, and he came back to win the 100 fly in 49.54. Lennox is the defending EISL champion in the 100 fly, Princeton's only individual win in its last two championship years. Meanwhile, Papageorge was controlling the action on the diving board. He took the 1-meter event with 293.50 points and added a win in the 3-meter competition with 308.95 points.
Princeton's lone other individual victory came from Dan Eckel, who won the 200 fly in 1:51.50. The Tigers finished the night by winning the 200 free relay in 1:24.41; the winning team consisted of Mike Carter, Chris Quemana, Mike Baity and Lennox.
Princeton is now 3-0 on the season and will resume dual meets in 2008. It will compete in one of its most exciting weekends of the season, the annual Big Al Open, Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
