St. Lawrence Edges Men's Hockey 4-3
November 09, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Charlie Giffin scored shorthanded with 4:25 left in regulation to lift St. Lawrence past the 18th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team 4-3 on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton senior captain Mike Moore recorded assists on all three Princeton goals in the loss.
St. Lawrence stayed a step ahead of Princeton all night as the Saints held four one-goal leads in the game. Princeton answered back each time St. Lawrence scored, which had the game deadlocked at three with five minutes remaining, until Giffin's game winner, which came shorthanded on a 2 on 1 when Jeremiah Cunningham found him on the opposite post with a crossing pass.
The Saints opened the scoring when Kevin DeVergilio scored 7:46 into the game from Matt Generous and Giffin. Princeton answered back at 14:24 on the power play when sophomore Mark Magnowski won an offensive zone faceoff. Freshman Matt Arhontas took control low and worked the puck to Moore at the point, who took a shot that was saved, but sophomore Tyler Beachell stuffed in the rebound to even the score at 1-1.
St. Lawrence regained the lead at 6:33 of the second when Nick Pitsikoulis scored off an offensive zone faceoff win by Sean Flanagan. The game remained 2-1 in the Saints' favor entering the third, but Princeton tied the game at 3:08 when sophomore Cam MacIntyre scored his sixth goal of the season off a give-and-go with Moore.
Jared Keller responded for St. Lawrence three minutes later when he took advantage of a Princeton turnover deep in the defensive zone and put the puck in the net. Princeton would answer back to tie the score at 3-3 when junior Brandan Kushniruk scored his second goal of the season from in front of the Saint goal. Sophomore Dan Bartlett and Moore assisted on the goal.
With the score tied at 3-3, the Tigers looked to be back into things when St. Lawernce's Brock McBride was whistled for a major penalty for a hit from behind at 12:26, but the Saint penalty kill held off the Tigers and St. Lawrence countered with a shorthanded goal.
Saint goaltender John Hallas made 31 saves for the win while Princeton sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba stopped 27 shots in the loss.
Princeton falls to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in ECAC Hockey with the loss, while St. Lawrence moved to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in league play. Princeton hosts Clarkson tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
