Sklapsky Makes 33 Saves as Princeton Shuts Out Dartmouth 3-0
February 10, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Senior goaltender B.J. Sklapsky made 33 saves to lead the Princeton men's hockey team to a 3-0 shutout of Dartmouth on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Freshman Mark Magnowski staked Sklapsky to an early 1-0 lead and the senior netminder shined from there, stopping every shot he faced as the Tigers picked up their 10th win of the season.
The Tigers came out strong and jumped on top with Magnowski's eighth goal of the season and his second in as many nights at 4:13 of the first period. Senior Darroll Powe worked the puck out of the corner and fed it to Magnowski in front, who faked a shot to freeze Dartmouth goaltender Mike Devine, then skated to the left to shoot around him for the goal. Sophomore Lee Jubinville also assisted on the goal.
The Tigers added to the lead with a power-play goal in the second period during a Dartmouth major penalty. With play in the Dartmouth end, freshman Kevin Crane stopped a Big Green clearing attempt and fed the puck across the blue line to classmate Jody Pederson. Pederson fed the puck to the crease where it bounced up and was swatted into the goal by senior Kevin Westgarth for his fifth goal of the year.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 11-6 in the second period and held a 22-15 shot advantage through two periods. At one point of the second period, the Tigers held Dartmouth shotless for more than 12 minutes.
Dartmouth played its best period in the third period, but was unable to solve Sklapsky, who made 18 saves in the final stanza to preserve the shutout. The shutout was the second of Sklapsky's career. His first came last season at home against Dartmouth, a game that Princeton also won by a 3-0 score.
Freshman Kevin Kaiser capped the scoring for Princeton when his shot found the empty net with 58 seconds remaining. Powe added his second assist of the game on the goal.
Sklapsky finished the night with 33 saves for the shutout while Devine made 28 saves in the loss for Dartmouth. Princeton was 1 for 5 with the man advantage, while holding Dartmouth without a goal in 10n power-play chances.
Princeton is now 10-12-3 on the season and 7-9-2 in the ECAC Hockey League. Princeton remains in eighth in the league standings, but gained two points on ninth-place Rensselaer. Princeton visits Colgate next Friday night.
