Princeton Trio Prepares for Spring Training
February 13, 2007 | Baseball
As pitchers and catchers begin to report for Major League Baseball's Spring Training, three Princeton baseball alums prepare to make their best impressions for the upcoming season. Chris Young begins his second season in San Diego, while Ross Ohlendorf and Will Venable look to impress and gain valuable experience as non-roster invitees to big league camps.
Young will begin his third full season in the Major Leagues when the San Diego Padres have pitchers and catcher report on Wednesday in Peoria, Ariz. Young completed his first season with the Padres in October and went 11-5 for the Padres with a 3.46 ERA in 179.1 innings pitched. He started 31 games and struck out 164 batters and was one of the players in the fan voting for the final spot on the National League's all-star team.
Young was the National League's Pitcher of the Month in June and represented the United States and Major League Baseball during an all-star series in Japan. Young was also on the mound for San Diego's lone win in the postseason, as he defeated eventual World Series champion St. Louis in the National League Division Series.
Joining Young in Padres camp once position players report will be Venable, who was recently named the Padres' minor leaguer of the year. Venable was an all-star at Class A Fort Wayne last season and hit .314 with 50 extra-base hits. He was a Mid-West League Player of the Week on one occasion and played for the West Oahu Cane Fires in the Hawaiian Winter League during the offseason where he won the league's batting title with a .330 average. Venable will likely start the season playing at AAA Portland.
Ross Ohlendorf reported Tuesday to Tampa, Fla., where the New York Yankees have Spring Training. Ohlendorf was acquired by the Yankees in the trade that sent Randy Johnson to Arizona during the offseason. He had a strong 2006 season in AA for the Tennessee Smokies and was called up to AAA Tucson late in the season for the playoffs. Ohlendorf was 10-8 in Tennessee with a 3.29 ERA in 177.2 innings pitched. He also struck out 125 and won a league Pitcher of the Week Award. Ohlendorf will likely start the season at AAA Scranton.
