Cowher, Lockwood Double-Double as Women's Hoops Tops Dartmouth, 61-56
February 23, 2007 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The rematch was nothing like the first meeting between the Princeton and Dartmouth women's basketball teams in Hanover, N.H., 13 days ago.
In a tight game where neither team had led by more than eight, Princeton held Dartmouth scoreless for a critical late-game stretch of two minutes as the Tigers pulled away for a 61-56 win.
In the season's first meeting, Dartmouth handed Princeton a 75-46 loss, the largest margin of defeat for the Tigers in the series' 57-meeting run. Meeting No. 58 went much better for the Orange and Black.
The loss was critical for Dartmouth (13-11, 7-3 Ivy), which entered the night one game back of Harvard with five to play. The Crimson held on for a 66-59 win at Penn, dropping Dartmouth two games back. Cornell defeated Yale, 59-55, to stay 2 ½ games back, while Princeton stayed four games back at 5-5, 11-13 overall.
Dartmouth's Kristen Craft tied the game at 51-51 on a bucket with 2:33 left, but the Big Green had two turnovers and two missed shots on its next four possessions as the Tigers opened a 60-51 lead by the time Dartmouth's Koren Schram drained a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to trim the lead to six. But time was on Princeton's side, and the Tigers came away victorious at home against the Big Green for just the second time since 2001.
“We really didn't change our strategy,” Princeton head coach Richard Barron said regarding the differing outcomes between the two meetings. “We executed the same game plan as we had up there, we just did a better job of it.”
In the first meeting, Dartmouth outrebounded Princeton 41-29, but the Tigers took the advantage in the rematch, 44-41.
Meagan Cowher and Casey Lockwood had 20 of those rebounds with 10 apiece, each going for double-doubles. Cowher's was her eighth of the season and third straight as she scored 19 points, while Lockwood added 12 points for her first double-double of the season.
Princeton also held Dartmouth to 30.5% shooting while hitting 42.6% of its own attempts.
The Tigers went on a 9-0 run in the first half, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 13-5 lead. Princeton held that lead until Dartmouth scored six straight points late in the half to regain the advantage, 22-21, on a Sydney Scott bucket.
Scott led Dartmouth with 17 points and 16 rebounds, the second-most for any individual opposing player this season. Yale's Erica Davis had 18 boards in a Feb. 2 Princeton win.
But the Tigers retook the lead in quick fashion as Jessica Berry hit a three-pointer with 2:11 left and Casey Lockwood tossed up a fallaway from in the paint as time ran out to give Princeton a 26-22 lead at the break.
Dartmouth fought back to tie the game at 30-30, and after Princeton regained a seven-point lead at 43-36 with 12:09 to play on an Elyse Umeda three-pointer, the Big Green chiseled away until taking the lead for the last time at 49-47 on a pair of Scott free throws with 4:33 left.
Cowher then had back-to-back buckets in less than a minute to put Princeton ahead 51-49 with 3:42 to play before Craft's shot tied it for the final time. Craft finished with 12 points as the second Big Green player in double figures.
The Tigers will honor their four seniors – Elyse Umeda, Shelly Slemp, Lillie Romeiser and Casey Lockwood – before Saturday's 7 p.m. game against Harvard. In addition to the video and audio available at www.GoPrincetonTigers.com, the game can be seen on Patriot 8 cable in the local Princeton area.
NOTES
It was the first time all season that two Tigers had double-doubles in the same game. Cowher had seven of Princeton's eight double-doubles this season heading into the game with Ariel Rogers earning the other in the Nov. 11 season-opener versus Wagner.
The last time Princeton had two players with double-doubles in the same game was Feb. 24, 2006 at Dartmouth (Becky Brown and Meagan Cowher).
Meagan Cowher, Casey Lockwood and Ariel Rogers are the only Tigers this year to have 10 or more rebounds in a game.
Meagan Cowher's 19 points moved her to 1,087 for her career, 11 points behind Maureen Lane (1999-2003) for 14th place.
Dartmouth leads the all-time series 39-19 and 16-11 at Jadwin Gym.
Though Casey Lockwood's double-double was her first of the season, it was the ninth of her career after six as a rookie and two last year.
Princeton's nine blocks tied a season-best, matching the nine Princeton had against Columbia Jan. 12.
