Women's Tennis Upends 33rd-Ranked Maryland in Dramatic Match, 4-3
February 25, 2007 | Women's Tennis
Sarah Huah's dramatic three-set victory at No. 4 singles in a match that went nearly four hours clinched one the biggest wins for Princeton women's tennis in recent years, a 4-3 victory over 33rd-ranked Maryland before a big crowd at the Jadwin Gym courts Sunday afternoon.
Huah, a freshman, came back to win in a third-set tiebreak over Elyse Steiner despite having to leave the court briefly during the set due to injury with the score tied at 4-4. Huah would lose that game, but came back to force the breaker and then dominate the tiebreak with a 7-1 win to give the Tigers a victory.
Princeton (5-2) would not have been in that situation if not for the heroics of Ivana King, who staved off two match points in the second set at No. 2 singles against 98th-ranked Marianne Baker. She came back to win that game on her serve, win the second set and then win a tiebreak in the third set to even the team match at 3-3 with Huah still on court.
Both King and Huah were on court for more than an hour after Maryland's Maggie MacKeever defeated Princeton's Blakely Ashley 7-6 and 6-2 at No. 5 singles to give the Terps a 3-2 advantage in the match.
Though the Tigers lost the doubles point in three close matches, Princeton would tie the team match early in singles. Joanna Roth defeated Brooke Rogers 6-4 and 6-2 to earn a victory at No. 6 singles, wihle Melissa Saiontz dominated the second set against Eleanor Peters at No. 1 in a matchup of nationally-ranked players to tie the team match at 2-2.
Sets in four different singles matches went to tiebreakers on Sunday. The match took approximately five hours to complete.
Princeton, which has won five straight matches, next plays March 7 against Rutgers.
