February 25, 2007 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The two-weekend Ivy League fencing championships concluded Sunday afternoon at Harvard and the Princeton men finished just one match away from winning an Ivy title. The Tiger women were 2-4 as Columbia completed a sweep.
Princeton's men entered the day at 3-1, one-half match behind Columbia, the Tigers' first opponent of the day. But Columbia swept all three weapons, taking the sabre 9-0 and the epee and foil 6-3 to win the match 21-6 and keep control of an Ivy race it would eventually share with Harvard as both teams finished 4-1 in the six-team league.
The Princeton men then edged Yale, 14-13, to finish with a 3-2 league record. Each weapon finished 5-4 with the sabre and epee going to Princeton and the foil to Yale. Thomas Abend finished with a 3-0 record in the sabre against the Bulldogs as the only 3-0 Tiger on the day.
Harvard and Columbia shared the league title at 4-1, while Penn and Princeton were right behind at 3-2. Yale (1-4) and Brown (0-5) rounded out the field.
On the women's side, the Tigers started with Columbia but fell, 19-8. The Lions won the sabre 8-1 and the foil 5-4 while only losing the epee 6-3. Jasjit Bhinder went 3-0 against the Lions.
Yale also took two of three weapons against the Tiger women, claiming the sabre 8-1 and the epee 6-3. Princeton won the foil, 5-4.
The Tigers finished up with a 19-8 win over Cornell. Princeton took the foil 7-2 and epee 6-3, with senior epeeist Erin McGarry finishing 3-0 while rookie foilist Jacqueline Svengsouk was also undefeated.
Columbia finished 6-0, one match ahead of Harvard at 5-1. Penn was next at 4-2, followed by Cornell and Princeton each at 2-4. Brown and Yale were both 1-5.
Princeton will compete next weekend in the IFA Championships hosted by the ECAC in nearby Lawrenceville, N.J., at the Lawrenceville School.
