March 11, 2007 | Baseball
Houston scored six runs over the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind and defeat the Princeton baseball team 8-3 on Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field. Freshman Greg Van Horn and senior Aaron Prince started the game with back-to-back home runs.
After struggling at the plate in the first two games of the three-game series, the Tigers outhit Houston in the final game of the series 11-8. Princeton started the game with a leadoff home run from Van Horn, his first of two hits in the game. Prince followed that up with a homer of his own down the right field line. Both player hit their first homers of the season.
The Tigers held the 2-0 lead until the third inning when Houston drew even with two unearned runs. Zak Presley scored the first run when after reaching on an error, he scored on a wild pitch. Houston then evened the score when Bryan Tully scored on a Dustin Kingsbury single.
Neither team was able to score over the middle three innings until the Tigers reclaimed the lead with a run in the seventh inning. Junior Spencer Lucian hit a lead single through the left side and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, scored when junior Micah Kaplan singled through the right side.
Princeton's lead was short-lived however as Houston took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh with four runs. The inning began with Houston's first two batter striking out, but then a pair of four-pitch walks set up the Cougars for a big inning. With two on, Ryan Lormand singled to plate a run. The Tully and Jimmy Cesario hit back-to-back doubles to plate three more runs in the inning.
Princeton put runners on base in the top of the eighth and ninth innings, but Houston sealed the win with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Freshman David Hale took the loss for Princeton as he allowed four runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Senior Michael Zaret allowed two runs in 2.2 innings, before sophomore Brad Gemberling took over and allowed just one hit over 3.1 innings.
Princeton fell to 1-5 with the loss and will return to action next Saturday when the Tigers begin a three-game set against UNC Greensboro.
