Several Tiger Fencers Finish Strong at NCAA Regional
March 12, 2007 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
TEANECK, N.J. -- Princeton sent 15 fencers to Saturday's NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Fairleigh Dickinson University and several Tigers are in good position to advance to the NCAA Championships later this month.
The NCAA has allocated seven of the 24 slots in each weapon to fencers from the Mid-Atlantic/South region. That cutoff would put four Tigers at the national meet with a few more very close. The official NCAA selections will be announced at a later date.
In women's foil, three Tigers were clustered near the cutoff. Rookie Jocelyn Svengsouk finished sixth, just ahead of seventh-place senior Sara Jew-Lim and eighth-place freshman Karen Petsche. In all, 28 foilists from 11 schools competed.
Erin McGarry, an two-time All-America, placed second in the epee while sophomore Jasjit Bhinder was eighth and freshman Chandler Clay was 16th of 32 competitors. Princeton's lone regional qualifier in the sabre, sophomore Cara DiGirolamo, placed 17th of 26.
On the men's side, junior Douglas Hohensee finished eighth in the foil while seniors Alejandro Bras and John-Paul Mitchell were 10th and 17th, respectively, and freshman Clayton Flanders was 18th of 31.
Junior Tommi Hurme was Princeton's highest men's finisher of any weapon, taking fourth in the epee, while sophomore Max Peck placed 15th and sophomore Noah Arjomand was 18th of 24. Princeton's only men's sabre fencer, freshman Thomas Abend, took eighth of 25.
The NCAA Championships will be held at Drew University in Madison, N.J., Mar. 22-25.
