The Princeton baseball team returns to action this weekend when it kicks off its weeklong Spring Break trip with a three-game series at UNC Greensboro. The Tigers trip takes them to Davidson and Longwood over the course of the next nine days.
The Tigers were swept in a three-game series at Houston last weekend. In the opener, the Tiger bats were shut down in a 5-0 Cougar win. The following evening, Houston's bats came alive in a 20-1 win. The series concluded with the Cougars earning a come from behind 8-3 win in the third game of the series.
Senior Sal Iacono was the lone Tiger to reach base with a hit in all three games over the weekend and he carries a five-game hitting streak into this weekend's action. Iacono is Princeton's second leading hitter at .393 and is one of three Tiger regulars above .300. Princeton's best average belongs to freshman Greg Van Horn, who is hitting at a .474 clip. Sophomore Derek Beckman is also above .300 at .313 and has a team-high five RBIs.
Sophomore Brad Gemberling pitched three shutout innings at Houston and is the only Tiger pitcher with more than one appearance to not allow a run. Junior Steven Miller leads the three Princeton starters thus far this season with a 3.38 ERA in eight innings of work.
On tap this weekend is a UNC Greensboro team that is 7-8 overall this season. The Spartans enter the weekend having lost three of their last four games, most recently dropping a 6-2 mid-week game at the North Carolina, the nation's top-ranked team.
Princeton and UNC Greensboro have only played one series against each other, and that came last season during Princeton Spring Break at Greensboro. UNCG took both games, winning 3-2 and 5-2. Junior Christian Staehely and Gemberling held UNCG to five hits in the first game, but fell 3-2, while juniors Spencer Lucian and Micah Kaplan both had a pair of hits in the 5-2 loss the following day.
Princeton will continue its trip on Tuesday and Wednesday with games at Davidson.
