The Princeton baseball team opens up its 2007 season this weekend with three games on the road at Elon. Princeton is the defending Ivy League champion and has won five of the last seven league titles. Princeton will begin its quest to make it two in a row on Saturday at Elon.
As is usually the case, Princeton starts its season with a long stretch of games away from home. The Tigers travel the first two weekends of the season, this weekend to Elon and next weekend to Houston, before embarking on their Spring Break trip the third weekend of March. Once that trip is completed, the Tigers open their home schedule with a mid-week game against Rutgers on March 28.
On the docket first though is Elon, a team that has already played 10 games this season and is currently 5-5 overall. Elon started the season with losses to Virginia and Coastal Carolina, before winning its next five games, defeating North Florida, St. Joseph's three times and Miami. Miami won the next two games of the series and Elon lost at High Point on Tuesday afternoon.
The series with Elon will begin the 144th season of baseball at Princeton. Princeton and Elon have met on six previous occasions and hold a 5-1 series edge against the Phoenix. All six meetings have come at Elon. Princeton won the first four games in the series, before Elon won in the 2002 season.
Princeton won its last game against Elon in 2004 by a 9-3 score. Current Tiger senior pitchers Wills Sweney and Michael Zaret saw action in the game. Zaret pitched 2.2 innings in relief and earned a save.
