The Princeton baseball completes its weeklong Spring Break trip this weekend with a three-game series at Longwood. Princeton is currently 3-8 overall this season and 2-3 on its current trip, having lost two of those games in the final at bat.
Princeton had an off day yesterday after having played five days in a row. Princeton started the trip with two losses at UNC Greensboro, before winning the third game of that series on Monday. The Tigers then headed to Davidson, winning the series opener on Tuesday and losing to the Wildcats on Wednesday.
Freshman Greg Van Horn and senior Sal Iacono continue to top Princeton in batting average as both sit north of the .400 mark. As a team, the Tigers have raised their batting average to .305 over the course of the week, as 10 Tigers having batting averages of .300. Van Horn's .436 average leads the team, while Iacono is currently tops in hits (19) and RBIs (11).
Sophomore Brad Gemberling and senior Eric Walz picked up wins for the Tigers this week as both had strong outings. Gemberling has been Princeton's most consistent pitcher this season and earned his first win of the year on Monday at UNC Greensboro. He has a 0.79 ERA in three appearances and 11.1 innings to lead the Tiger staff. Walz pitched six scoreless innings in Tuesday's win over Davidson to earn his first win of the season.
The Tigers next face Longwood, a team Princeton has never played. The Lancers were on the Tigers schedule two seasons ago, but weather won the day that afternoon and the game was cancelled. The Lancers, a Division I independent, are currently 18-7 this season. Longwood was beaten at Virginia Tech on Wednesday in its last game. That loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Lancers, which included a three-game sweep of Marist, two wins over Farleigh Dickinson and Coppin State, and single wins over Radford and Valparaiso.
Princeton will return back to campus following the weekend, and will start the Northern part of its schedule next Wednesday at home against Rutgers.
