March 28, 2007 | Softball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers swept Princeton softball 10-0 and 9-4 Wednesday afternoon in Piscataway, N.J., in the Tigers' first games in the northeast of the 2007 season and last contests before the Ivy season begins this weekend.
The Tigers fell to 9-18 while Rutgers improved to 10-18.
Game 1: Rutgers 10, Princeton 0 (5 inn.)
In game one, Rutgers scored six runs in the third inning and sent 11 batters to the plate on the way to a 10-0 win.
The inning started with three straight singles before Rutgers pitcher Nicole Lindley scored on a wild pitch, evading a rundown in the process. Sarah Kalka then drove home two more with a single, and Mallory Miller blasted a three-run home run, her third of the year, to push the lead to 6-0. Rutgers had six hits in the inning and reached two more on a walk and a hit batter.
In the fourth, Rutgers had two more base hits to start the inning and Kalka brought one home with a sacrifice fly to put the Scarlet Knights ahead 7-0.
Rutgers ended the game in the bottom of the fifth, when after a single and walk, Amanda Heller drove her first home run of the year to rightfield to bring home three runs and invoke the eight-run rule.
Princeton starter Calli Jo Varner dropped to 3-6 with the loss, allowing 10 hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Lindley, who would also win the second game to improve to 3-3, allowing two hits with a walk and striking out five.
Princeton's hits came from Collette Abbott and Stephanie Steel, though seven of the nine Tiger batters reached base during the game. Princeton's best chance to score came in the fifth when the Tigers had runners on second and third, but with two out before a groundout ended the opportunity.
Game 2: Rutgers 9, Princeton 4
Rutgers scored five runs between the fourth and fifth innings to break a four-all tie in a 9-4 win.
The Scarlet Knights scored four in the first. Brittany Loisel led off the game with a home run, her first of the season, and two runs later scored on a double by Mallory Miller. The fourth run came on a groundout by Kaitlyn Valiante.
But the Tigers pulled even in the following inning, using a pair of singles, two walks and a three-RBI double by Stephanie Steel. Beth Dalmut brought home the first run of the inning with a single two batters before Steel's key hit.
Chrissy Yard, who started the game and allowed Princeton's four runs on three hits and two walks, striking out one, left after the inning. Nicole Lindley, who won the first game in the circle for the Scarlet Knights, entered and kept Princeton off the board for the last five frames. She allowed only one hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
Jamie Lettire (2-4) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and a walk in five innings, striking out one. Fellow rookie Kelsey Quist made her pitching debut in a perfect sixth inning.
Rutgers broke the 4-4 tie with two runs in the fourth. Loisel cashed in an Ashley Hartley walk with a double and Loisel scored on a throwing error to help the Scarlet Knights to a 6-4 lead. The following inning, three Knights had singles and Valiante, Hartley and Amanda Heller picked up RBIs.
