Brown Takes Two From Princeton Baseball
March 31, 2007 | Baseball
PRINCETON -- Brown rallied late to come from behind and defeat the Princeton baseball team on Saturday at Clarke Field and complete a two-game sweep of the Tigers. The Bears took the opener 4-2 and then won the second game in comeback fashion 14-8.
Game 1
Brown's Jeff Deitz picked up a complete game win in the opener as he allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings. Princeton junior starter Steven Miller also was good, pitching seven innings and giving up four runs on eight hits.
Brown went up 2-0 with two runs in the second when Robert Papenhouse hit a run-scoring single and Bryan Tews stole home. The Tigers countered with run in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Adrian Turnham singled home senior Sal Iacono, after Iacono began the inning with a double that one-hopped the wall in right field.
The Bears extended the lead in the fourth with two more runs when Dan Shapiro singled home a pair of runs after Brown's first two batters reached. Princeton once again countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Brian Berkowitz drove in freshman Jack Murphy.
Game 2
The second game looked to be in Princeton's favor before Brown used an 11-run ninth inning to rally from an 8-3 deficit and win 14-8. The Bears used four hits and three errors in the inning to plate 11 runs and pull out the win.
Princeton went ahead 1-0 in the game with an unearned run in the first. Brown countered in the next inning to even the score before the Tigers went up 3-1 in the fourth on a two-run double from freshman Greg Van Horn. Princeton then added a run in the fifth on a Turnham single and a two more in the sixth on a fielder's choice and error. Princeton added its last two runs in the eighth when Murphy hit his fourth home run of the season to right field.
Junior Christian Staehely worked seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. Freshman Langford Stuber allowed five runs and senior Gavin Fabian allowed six run, only two of which were earned. Brown's Paul Costa earned the win.
