This weekend marks a homecoming for the eight Texans on the Princeton baseball team, as the Tigers head to Houston for a three-game series with the Cougars. Princeton opened its season last weekend at Elon, where it dropped the first two games before picking up its first win of the season with an 11-6 decision on Sunday.
Senior Sal Iacono led the Tigers with four hits and two RBI in the win, while sophomore Andrew Doupe and freshman Greg Van Horn knocked out three hits each. Senior hurler Michael Zaret was credited with the win, while sophomore Brad Gemberling held Elon hitless over the final three innings to register the save. Sophomore Derek Beckman picked up three RBIs in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Princeton bats came out strong against Elon as the Tigers are currently hitting .339 as a team, while opponents are only hitting .262 against the Tigers. Van Horn was hot from the start, batting .556 over the weekend, while Doupe is right at .500 and hit Princeton's lone home run of the weekend. Beckman comes next at .385 and he drove in a team-high five runs during the series.
The Princeton pitching staff had its good moments and it struggles over the weekend. Four strong innings from junior Steven Miller and three hitless ones from Gemberling highlighted the weekend for the staff. Miller started the opener and scattered two hits and struck out five in the outing. Gemberling had a three-inning save in the third game and struck out four.
Next up is a Houston team that is 8-9 on the season. The Cougars opened their season more than a month ago with a 15-6 win over Stephen F. Austin, and have also posted wins over Baylor, Sam Houston State, McNeese State, and Northwestern State, while splitting a pair of games with Texas-San Antonio. The Cougars were swept by UC-Irvine, and have also dropped decisions to Texas A&M, Arizona State, and Dallas Baptist. Houston most recently defeated Lamar on Tuesday night.
The Tigers last saw Houston in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Houston Regional on May 26, 2000, where the Cougars claimed a come-from-behind 7-6 win with a walk-off home run. Princeton jumped out an early 4-0 lead behind All-America pitcher and current San Diego Padre Chris Young and five other All-Ivy League players, but Houston battled back with a two-run sixth inning and three-run seventh, capped off by the walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth.
Princeton will return home after the weekend for a week of class before its Spring Break trip, which begins next weekend at UNC Greensboro.
