Men's Lightweights Fall To Defending Champ Cornell In Platt Cup Showdown
April 14, 2007 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton men's lightweight crew dropped its first race of the season Saturday morning, and it was the defending national champion Cornell Big Red who got the job done. Cornell claimed the Platt Cup during a dominant day on its home course in Ithaca.
On a day when the headwind increased as racing progressed, the Big Red won all five races against Princeton and Rutgers. The varsity showdown went to the Big Red 1V in 6:21.6, while Princeton took second in 6:29.3. Rutgers rounded out the field in 6:37.6.
Princeton nearly pulled out a win in the second varsity showdown, but its final time of 6:33.7 was edged out by 1.5 seconds. The 2V did top Rutgers by 26 full seconds. The Tiger first novice boat did finish its race first, but its time of 6:24.7 was disqualified because the coxswain raced without weight.
Princeton is now 4-1 overall, 1-1 in the Ivy League, and will stay local for each of the next two weekends. The Tigers will head to the Schuylkill next weekend for a showdown with both Penn and Georgetown, and then they will return to Lake Carnegie for the annual H-Y-P regatta.
