Five to Join Princeton Men's Water Polo

A class of five incoming freshmen will join the Princeton men's water polo team next season. The class is comprised of Jeff Cole, Matt Hale, Mike Merlone, Tommy Parolin and Peter Schulam, and will join a cast of 13 returning players on the Princeton roster.
Jeff Cole
2M ? Santa Barbara, Calif ? Santa Barbara High School
Jeff Cole attended Santa Barbara High School and won CIF his freshman and senior year. Cole was a three-year varsity water polo player and swimmer. He was awarded first-team All-CIF honors his junior year and was the CIF Division 2 Player of the Year and a first-team All-America as a senior. Cole also won a gold medal at Junior Olympics for the 18-and-under division with his club team in 2006.
Matt Hale
2MD ? Atherton, Calif. ? The Menlo School
Matt Hale started playing as a sophomore on the JV team, and earned the most improved player award. As a junior he was first player off the bench on the varsity squad and earned PAL honorable mention. As a senior, he was part of the Stanford 18's B team that placed in the top 10 at the Junior Olympics and was named a NISCA Academic All-America. Additionally he was co-captain of his school team that went 28-1 and won the CCS title and the TruWest tournament. He earned first-team PAL and CCS honors his senior year and was a fourth team All-American.
Mike Merlone
Goalkeeper ? Atherton, Calif. ? The Menlo School
Mike Merlone started in the goal for The Menlo School his junior and senior years and was the Most Valuable Goalie of the central coast section both years and a second-team All-America as a junior. In his senior season, his team had a record of 28-1 and won its second consecutive CCS title. Along with winning its section his team won multiple other tournaments including the Truwest Memorial Cup. Merlone also has a strong swimming background, qualifying for CCS championships three straight years and reaching the finals in both his sophomore and junior years in the 100-breast stroke.
Tommy Parolin
Utility ? Chicago, Ill. ? Fenwick High School
Tommy Parolin started on three consecutive state championship teams for Fenwick High School. He was an All-State selection as a sophomore and junior and was selected as an All-America both years. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the state tournament as a junior. He has also competed on the Midwest Zone Team for five years.
Peter Schulam
Driver ? Malibu, Calif. ? Malibu High School
Peter Schulam played four years of varsity water polo at Malibu High School. He was the team's captain his senior year and was awarded the team's Most Valuable Player award and earned first-team all-league honors. He also played with the Waves Water Polo Club and was a member of the 16-and-under team in 2005 that won the gold medal at the National Age Group Championships and the silver at the Junior Olympics.
