Princeton to Head to Ivy Golf Championships This Weekend
April 19, 2007 | Men's Golf, Women's Golf
PRINCETON, N.J. ? As with every season, the focal point of the Princeton golf team's year is this weekend at the Ivy League Championships. This year's event will take place at Galloway National Golf Club for the men and Trenton Country Club for the women.
The two courses won't be as close as the men's and women's sites were last year when they were just a few miles apart in northwestern New Jersey's Sussex County. Galloway National is located just northwest of Atlantic City, and Trenton Country Club is in West Trenton, not far from the Ivy League's home base in Princeton.
The 54-hole tournament will begin Saturday at both sites at 7:30 a.m. for first-round action and 12:30 p.m. for second-round play. Sunday's play will begin at 7:30 a.m. for the men and 8:00 a.m. for the women.
Galloway National's course measures 6,901 yards from the yellow tees, the more distant of the two tees at the course, and is a par-71. Trenton Country Club measures 6,358 yards from the blue tees, which are the course's longest, and 6,127 yards from the next-longest white tees. It is also a par-71.
Both of Princeton's teams have had tremendous success at the Ivy League meet. The men have won 19 Ivy League titles since the event began in 1975, including the last three. Princeton's women have won four times since the first conference event in 1997. The current seniors have won titles in 2004 and 2005 before finishing third a year ago.
Princeton's men are coming off their highest finish of the year, taking second at their yearly home meet, the Princeton Invitational, last weekend. Senior John Sawin won the event by two shots at 4-under.
The Tiger women are looking to win four tournament titles in a season for the seventh time since the program attained varsity status in 1991-92. After winning two tournaments in the fall, Princeton won its latest tournament, the Hoya Invitational, with sophomore Susannah Aboff winning the individual title. Aboff was an All-Ivy honoree a year ago. Princeton's women have also finished ahead of every Northeastern team in its tournaments, including all six Ivy League schools on at least one occasion.
Updated scoring can be found here for the men and here for the women.
