The Princeton baseball team travels to Penn this weekend for four important games as the Tigers look to make their move and climb in the division standings. Princeton is 6-6 in league play and sits two games behind first-place Penn (9-5) in the Gehrig Division standings entering the weekend.
The Tigers climbed back to .500 in league play on Wednesday by sweeping Columbia in a doubleheader at Clarke Field. The wins salvaged a four-game split with the Lions as both teams took two wins. The wins moved Princeton back within two games of Penn in the division standings. The Quakers are two games ahead of both Princeton and Cornell (5-5). Columbia is three games back at 7-9. In the Rolfe Division, both Brown and Harvard are tied atop the division at 7-3. The pair will play four times this weekend at Brown. Yale and Dartmouth are four and five games back, respectively.
Columbia took two games from Princeton before rain washed away Sunday's doubleheader and pushed it to Wednesday. Because of that Princeton has already played three games this week, losing a non-league games at Seton Hall on Tuesday before Wednesday's wins.
On Tuesday at Seton Hall, the Tigers spotted the Pirates a 5-1 lead in the second inning before closing the gap later in the game. Five Tigers had hits in the game, including freshman Greg Van Horn who drove in two with a triple. Senior Aaron Prince also had an RBI, and senior Sal Iacono doubled in the game.
Princeton then took two from Columbia Wednesday, doubling its way to an 11-5 win in the opener. The Tigers set a Princeton record in that game, hitting eight doubles, and freshman Brian Berkowitz tied a Princeton record, with three of the doubles coming off his bat. Iacono and sophomores Adrian Turnham and Dan DeGeorge each drove in two runs in the game, and Iacono hit his fourth homer of the season. Freshman David Hale pitched five innings for the win.
In the nightcap, the Tigers led the whole way until Columbia evened the score in the top of the ninth. Princeton rallied back though and won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the inning. Prince and sophomore Andrew Doupe hit solo homers in the game, and Doupe and DeGeorge drove in additional runs. The Tigers won the game in the ninth when Iacono hit a leadoff double and scored on a Turnham single, his fifth hit in the doubleheader. Senior Eric Walz pitched seven solid innings.
Princeton's opponent for the weekend is first-place Penn. The Quakers are 17-14 overall and 9-5 in the league. After opening the league season losing three of four to Columbia, Penn has gone 8-2 in league play. The Quakers played twice this week leading into the series, winning in 10 innings on Tuesday against Lehigh and at Rider on Wednesday.
Princeton leads its all-time series with Penn 137-89-3 overall and is 61-54-1 against the Quakers on the road. Princeton and Penn have split their four-game sets in each of the past three seasons. Last year the Tigers won the first game 4-3 with three runs in the last of the eighth, taking the win when Stephen Wendell singled to score Iacono with the winning run. Penn came back in the nightcap to win 3-2 with a run in the top if the 10th. The following day Penn took the opener 9-7 before Princeton closed the day with a 14-2 win in which junior Christian Staehely allowed four hits in nine innings and Iacono and junior Spencer Lucian both hit home runs.
