Penn Sweeps Doubleheader in Baseball
April 21, 2007 | Baseball
First-place Penn swept a doubleheader from the Princeton baseball team on Saturday at Meiklejohn Stadium, claiming wins of 11-1 and 6-4 over the Tigers. Senior Aaron Prince has hits in both games, and freshman David Hale homered in the second game.
Game 1
Penn jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener in an eventual 11-1 win. Kyle Armeny provided the big hit in the inning when he hit a three-run homer in the inning. Princeton chipped a run off the lead to make the score 3-1 in the third inning when Prince tripled to center field and scored on senior Sal Iacono's sac fly.
Penn promptly got the run back in the bottom of the inning and padded its lead with six more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The big hit of that inning came on a William Gordon grand slam that completed the scoring.
Prince, sophomore Adrian Turnham and freshman Brian Berkowitz each had two hits in the game. Both of Prince's hits were for extra bases.
Penn's Todd Roth allowed seven hits and a run in seven innings for the win. Junior Steven Miller gave up nine runs on nine hits and took the loss.
Game 2
The Quakers again jumped out to a lead in the first inning in the second game, as Joey Boaen hit a two-run homer to give the Quakers the lead. The lead stayed at 2-0 until Princeton cut the lead to 2-1 with a single run in the fifth inning. Freshman Jack Murphy led off the inning with a double and scored when junior Micah Kaplan followed him with another double.
Penn then pulled out the lead scoring a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Alex Nwaka hit a solo homer and Boaen also singled in a run. An inning later, Armeny scored on an error and Jeff Cellucci doubled in a run.
Princeton made a run at it drawing even in the ninth as Princeton plated three runs to cut the final margin to 6-4. A fielder's choice after Iacono's leadoff single and a walk to Kaplan put two on base with two outs with Hale coming to bat. Hale, who had been 0 for 3 in the game hit his first collegiate home run to right center to clear the bases, but Princeton was unable to draw closer and Penn held on for the win.
Jim Birmingham allowed four runs on seven hits for the win, while junior Christian Staehely took the loss, allowing all six Penn runs.

The losses dropped Princeton to 10-21 overall and 6-8 in the Ivy League. Princeton is now four games behind Penn in the league standings. The teams will complete their series with a doubleheader on Sunday.
