Princeton's Schaus, Welch Honored with Ivy Weekly Softball Awards
April 03, 2007 | Softball
PRINCETON, N.J. -- In recognition of their performances to help the Princeton softball team to a 4-0 Ivy League weekend, Kathryn Welch and Kristen Schaus have been honored with weekly awards from the league.
Welch was named the Ivy League Player of the Week for hitting .588 (10 for 17) in five games played. All 10 hits came in the final three games of the weekend against Yale and Brown, when she went 10 for 13. Sunday, in the doubleheader against Yale, Welch was 7 for 9, knocking in all five of her runs for the week.
Schaus won both games she pitched, turning in victories against Brown and Yale. She shut out Brown, 2-0, on three hits with eight strikeouts and came back with a 10-inning, 4-1 win over Yale the next day. Her ERA for the week was 0.41.
The honors are the second and third for Princeton players this season in the fourth week of Ivy honors. On March 13, Collette Abbott was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
Welch, a sophomore, was selected as the Ivy's top rookie three of the eight weeks last year on the way to being chosen as the Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Schaus, who won the yearly rookie honor in 2005, won one rookie weekly honor that season and one Ivy Pitcher of the Week award last year. She has been a first-team All-Ivy pitcher in both of her seasons so far.
Princeton started Ivy play 4-0 for the 14th time in 26 seasons of varsity softball last week and will look to extend the winning streak this weekend against Harvard and Dartmouth. Saturday's doubleheader against the Crimson will begin at noon at Class of 1895 Field with Sunday's twinbill against the Big Green starting at 1 p.m.
