The Princeton baseball team faces in-state rival Monmouth on Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field in a mid-week non-conference game. Princeton split four games over the weekend and will look to snap a three-game skid against Monmouth.
Princeton went 2-2 last weekend, splitting two Ivy League doubleheaders, one against Harvard and one against Dartmouth. Princeton won the first and last games of the weekend, and dropped the middle two.
Princeton's starting pitching bared down over the weekend, lowering the Tigers' team ERA to 5.70, a drop of more than two-thirds of a run. Princeton allowed eight earned runs in the four games, and Princeton pitchers struck out 31 batters.
At the plate the Tigers raised their batting average five points to .294. Sophomore Dan DeGeorge hit a team-high .600 in the four games, picking up seven hits in Saturday's doubleheader with Harvard and two on Sunday against Dartmouth. The performance lifted DeGeorge to .307 for the season, which is a season high.
DeGeorge is now one of six Tiger regulars hitting above the .300 level. The group is led by senior Sal Iacono who is batting .418 overall. Iacono had his record hitting streak of 20 games snapped in the first game against Dartmouth, but picked up three hits in the nightcap. Princeton's current longest hitting streak now belongs to sophomore Adrian Turnham, who has hits in eight-straight games. Freshman Greg Van Horn has hits in seven-straight games and is at .373 for the season.
Van Horn, Iacono and Turnham were among six Tigers to double in Sunday's second game against Dartmouth. Iacono had two, which gave Princeton seven doubles in the game and tied a Princeton record for doubles in a game.
Pending Monday's results between Columbia and Yale, and Penn and Brown, Princeton sits a game behind Cornell in the Gehrig Division standings. Princeton is 4-4 in the league while Cornell is 5-3, as both teams head into Gehrig Division play.
Princeton's mid-week opponent this week is Monmouth and Princeton will enter the game looking to snap a current three-game losing skid to the Hawks, dating back two seasons. Monmouth won games in Princeton and at home in 2005 and won last season's meeting in West Long Branch by an 11-1 score. In that game, DeGeorge hit a solo home run and had two hits in the game. Senior Aaron Prince also had two hits in the game.
Princeton leads the all-time series with Monmouth 18-9 and holds an 11-3 edge in games played in Princeton. The Hawks are currently 14-10-1 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast Conference. The Hawks recently split a four-game league series at Mount St. Mary's. Monmouth and Princeton have not played any common opponents, but Monmouth did face Ivy foe Columbia last Tuesday and defeated the Lions 10-3.
