2007 Men's Water Polo Schedule Announced
May 10, 2007 | Men's Water Polo
The 2007 Princeton men's water polo was announced on Thursday and features a minimum of 26 games and five tournaments. The season kicks off with the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 8-9 and includes six other home games.
The Tigers enter 2007 looking to regain the Southern Championship after runner-up finishes the last two seasons. Princeton was 18-8 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Division last season and made it to the Southern and Eastern Championship games.
The season kicks off the weekend of Sept. 8-9 when Princeton hosts its annual invitational. The Tigers will likely play four games over the weekend but the schedule has not yet been made. Santa Clara, Navy, George Washington, Fordham and Iona will join Princeton among the teams that will be at the tournament.
Princeton opens league play the next weekend at Bucknell before hosting MIT in a non-league game, which is the first meeting between the two since Princeton topped MIT in the first round of the 2004 Eastern Championships. Princeton then hosts Johns Hopkins and George Washington the following weekend in league contests at DeNunzio Pool.
Princeton spends the final weekend of September at Bucknell, where the Bison will host the ECAC Championship. Princeton placed third in the tournament in 2006, falling to Navy in the semis and topping Bucknell in the third-place game.
Play returns to DeNunzio Pool the first weekend in October as Princeton hosts Navy and Bucknell on Oct. 6. The next day Princeton will play a non-league game against an opponent still to be determined.
The Tigers will then travel to California the next week to compete at the SoCal Tournament, hosted by UC Irvine, before wrapping up the regular season with three games around the nation's capital. Princeton visits Johns Hopkins on a Friday night, Navy on Saturday and George Washington on Sunday. Also on that Sunday, Princeton will face Air Force in a game played at Navy. Princeton last played Air Force during the 2004 season and won 11-6 at the NorCal Tournament.
The season concludes with two tournaments in November. First the five Southern Division teams will meet for the Southern Championships at Navy on Nov. 3-4, with the top teams advancing to the Eastern Championships two weekends later at MIT. The Eastern Champion will receive the CWPA's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which will be held at Stanford on Dec. 1-2.
