The Princeton baseball team concludes its 2007 schedule on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts local-rival Rider in a non-league game. The game will mark the final collegiate appearance for the seven members of Princeton's senior class.
Princeton entered last weekend needing to take all four of its game from Cornell in order to force a playoff game against Penn for the Gehrig Division title, and came close by winning the first three contests and pushing the fourth one to extra innings before Cornell was able to win. The loss marks just the second time in 12 years that Princeton is not the Gehrig Division champion.
Princeton got big weekends from its three and four hitters, senior Sal Iacono and freshman Jack Murphy. Iacono batted .650 in the final league weekend of his collegiate career, going 13 for 20 at the plate. Iacono had 10 singles in the five games last week and added a double, triple and home run. The senior also drove in four runs and scored four runs while being perfect in the field. Iacono's week raised his team-leading batting average to .424. Murphy also impressed during the week as he went 8 for 19 at the plate for a .421 week. The freshman drove in a total of eight runs during the week and scored two as he belted a pair of homers in the first game against Cornell. In total he homered twice and drove in six runs on the first day against Cornell, then drove in two important runs in Sunday's win in the opening game. Murphy also threw out two base runners during the week.
Princeton started the weekend with a 7-5 win over Cornell in a game in which Murphy hit two homers and drove in four runs. Sophomore Brad Gemberling got the complete game win as Princeton was on its way to sweeping Saturday's doubleheader. In the nightcap, Princeton scored single runs in four innings for a 4-3 win. Junior Steven Miller for the win, while Murphy drove in two runs. Iacono had three hits.
The series shifted venues to Cornell, where the Tigers continued where they left off with a 4-3 win in the opener. Freshman David Hale got the complete game win while senior Aaron Prince scored three runs. That moved Princeton to the fourth and final game and the Tigers got an early lead on freshman Greg Van Horn's three-run homer in the second. Iacono also hit a solo homer in the game, one of his five hits, but Cornell was able to stay with the Tigers and the game went to extra innings tied at 4-4. In the 12th Cornell, loaded the bases and scored the winning run. Senior Eric Walz went the distance for the Tigers, battling through 11.1 innings.
Up next for the Tigers in Rider. The Broncs are 14-22 overall and 8-9 in the MAAC. Rider enters the game having dropped all three games in a weekend series at Manhattan. Rider and Princeton share four common opponents. Both teams lost to Seton Hall and Rutgers, while Princeton lost to Monmouth and Rider topped the Hawks. Rider also lost to Penn, while Princeton split four games with the Quakers.
The all-time series between Princeton and Rider is deadlocked at 21-21. Princeton is 13-7 on its home field, while Rider is 14-8 on its home field. The series has seesawed back-and-forth with no team ever winning more than three consecutive meetings. Last year Rider won 9-5 on its home field, snapping a three-game Princeton winning streak.
In last year's game, Iacono and sophomore Adrian Turnham both drove in runs, while sophomore Derek Beckman scored a pair in the Tiger loss. Princeton led the game early before Rider rallied in the late innings. Princeton beat Rider 5-1 the previous season.
The game will mark the final collegiate game for Princeton's seven seniors: Gavin Fabian, Sal Iacono, Aaron Prince, Ian Shannon, Wills Sweney, Eric Walz and Michael Zaret. Fabian will start Wednesday's game and all the others, except an injured Sweney, are expected to appear in the game.
