Trombino, Jungers, Sowanick, Kovler Named First-Team All-Ivy League
May 09, 2007 | Men's Lacrosse
Peter Trombino, Zachary Jungers and Scott Sowanick have accomplished what no other group of Princeton men's lacrosse captains have ever done before them: They have all been named first-team All-Ivy League.
Never before has Princeton had its entire group of captains all earn first-team honors, except in years when the team had a single captain.
In addition, Princeton, with the nation's top-ranked defense, had all of its starting longsticks and goalie earn All-Ivy honors.
Trombino, Jungers and Sowanick were joined on the first team by Mark Kovler, who became the first sophomore midfielder at Princeton to be first-team All-Ivy since Josh Sims in 1998.
Defenseman Dan Cocoziello and goalie Alex Hewit, juniors who were high school teammates, were second-team selections, while sophomore defensemen Chris Peyser and Charlie Kolkin were honorable mention picks.
Cornell goalie Matt McMonagle was a unanimous choice as Ivy Player of the Year, while Dartmouth's Ari Sussman was named Rookie of the Year.
Trombino is the only player in school history with four seasons of at least 20 goals and at least 10 assists, is one of five players in school history with four seasons of at least 20 goals and is one of three players with at least 95 goals and at least 50 assists. He leads the Tigers with 28 goals and 39 points.
Sowanick, who like Trombino has started every game of his career, has been called by head coach Bill Tierney “the engine” of the team. Sowanick has 10 goals and 14 assists on the year.
Jungers was the keystone of the defense until he suffered a knee injury that has forced him to miss the last three games. Prior to that, Jungers had started every game on close defense the past two years after being the top longstick midfielder his freshman and sophomore years. He is one of 17 final nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given to the outstanding player in college lacrosse, and one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior Class Award for Lacrosse, given to recognize excellence in athletics, academics and service.
Kovler is second to Trombino with 21 goals on the year, making him the third Tiger middie this decade to reach at least 20 goals. He also has the highest goal total by a sophomore Tiger middie since Sims had 32 in 1998.
Cocoziello, a first-team selection a year ago, has started every game of his career on defense for the Tigers. Hewit, a first-team All-America last year after being named second-team All-Ivy, ranks second nationally in goals-against average (6.12) and sixth in save percentage (.604).
Peyser has started every game this season on defense. Kolkin was the top longstick midfielder before taking Jungers' spot after his injury.
Princeton went 10-3 during the regular season. The Tigers are at Georgetown Sunday (noon) in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
