Mullen, Nightingale Advance to 5,000-Meter Finals at NCAA Track Championships
June 07, 2007 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Princeton's David Nightingale and Catha Mullen each finished in the top six of their respective 5,000-meter heats late Wednesday night in Sacramento to advance to Friday's finals at the 2007 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Nightingale, running in the first of two qualifying heats in the men's 5,000, was just nipped at the line for first place in the heat but easily qualified with his second-place mark of 14:30.59. The top six in the heat, all of whom qualify for Friday's final, finished within a span of less than a second.
Mullen also ran in the first heat in the women's competition and qualified for the final with a fifth-place time of 16:26.17.
The top six from each of two heats in the 5,000, plus the top four times after that, advance to Friday's 16-person finals on both the men's and women's sides. The men's 5,000-meter final takes place at 10:45 p.m. ET Friday night, while the women follow the men at 11:10 p.m. ET.
Princeton also had competitors in the field events Wednesday, though neither Heps and IC4A champion Justin Frick in the high jump nor Andrew Park in the pole vault advanced to Friday's finals in their respective events.
