LEXINGTON, KY – Five more Tigers and an Ivy-record-setting 4x400 relay squad punched tickets to the NCAA outdoor championships as the Tigers concluded competition at the NCAA East First Round on Friday.
Connor McCormick was the first Tiger to advance to nationals on Friday, securing his spot with a fourth place finish in heat two of the 1500m (3:43.04). It will mark the senior's first trip to the NCAA outdoor championships.
Shining in the steeplechase, a pair of Tigers punched tickets to Eugene in Brian Boler and Jackson Shorten. Running a personal best of 8:31.28, Boler took sixth overall and second in his heat to automatically qualify. Also taking second in his heat, Shorten ran 8:34.11 to advance.
In a blazing 5000m race in heat one, senior Myles Hogan finished fourth with a time of 13:31.26 to qualify for his first outdoor NCAAs. Behind the front pack, Hogan exploded into a final lap of 58.13 - fastest of the top four placers, to cross the finish and secure his spot.
In the 400m, Joey Gant continued to knock on the sub-45 door as he ran 45.13. With a strong finish, he took third to automatically qualify, marking his first individual NCAA berth.
In a grand finale to the NCAA East, Gant and fellow 4x400 runners Jon York, Xavier Donaldson and Kavon Miller stunned as they set an Ivy record and punched a ticket to nationals. With Donaldson and Gant running sub-45 splits (44.77 and 44.68), and Gant kicking out a runner on the anchor, the Tigers finished third to advance with a time of 3:02.60.
Their time broke the previous Ivy record of 3:02.62, set by Princeton at last year's NCAA East.
Joining Friday's qualifiers in Eugene will be the two Tigers who secured their spots at Hayward Field on Wednesday, including Greg Foster (long jump) and Jacob Nenow (10.000m).
With the regional competition now concluded, the Tigers will look ahead to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., beginning on June 11.
