Iacono Selected by Houston in MLB Draft
June 08, 2007 | Baseball
The Houston Astros selected Princeton third baseman/catcher Sal Iacono in the Major League Baseball draft. Iacono led the Tigers in most offensive categories in 2007 and won the Ivy League Blair Bat Award as the league's batting champion.
The senior was a first-team All-Ivy selection this spring as he led the Tigers in batting average, hits, doubles and RBIs. Iacono completed his Princeton career with his best year in the orange and black, and his .413 batting average was the third-highest single-season average in Princeton baseball history, and he hit .453 in Ivy League play.
Iacono, a native of Staten Island, N.Y., becomes the first Tiger drafted in two seasons. since both Will Venable and Worth Lumry were chosen in the 2005 draft. He will join the eight Tigers that are currently on Major or Minor League rosters and the 11 total Tigers playing professional baseball.
Iacono's destination after signing will likely be either Greenville, Tenn., where the Astros' Rookie Ball affiliate plays, or Troy, N.Y., where the Astros' Short Season A Ball affiliate, the Tri-City Valley Cats, plays in the New York-Penn League.
