Matheson's Canadian Soccer Squad Falls to U.S., Earns Berth in Pan-Am Bronze Medal Game
July 24, 2007 | Women's Soccer
Diana Matheson, a rising senior on the Princeton women's soccer team, played all 90 minutes in Canada's 2-1 loss to the U.S. in the Pan-American Games semifinal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Monday.
The U.S. scored goals in the 18th and 77th minute to gain a 2-0 lead with both goals coming from Lauren Cheney. Canada's Kara Lang halved the deficit in the 88th minute.
Jillian Ellis, a William and Mary teammate of Princeton head coach Julie Shackford and a collegiate coach at UCLA, heads up the under-20 squad that is representing the United States at the Pan-Am Games. Shackford served as an assistant coach with Ellis with the U-20 squad during a pre-Games training trip to Mexico this spring.
It was the fourth time in Canada's five contests in Brazil that Matheson was on the pitch from the opening whistle to the final horn. Canada topped Uruguay, Ecuador and Jamaica to start pool play before falling to Brazil, though the 3-1 record was still good enough to earn a berth in the semifinal round. The loss to the U.S. puts Canada against Mexico in the Bronze Medal Game, to be played Thursday at 8 a.m. Eastern Time (9 a.m. local time). Mexico dropped the other semifinal 2-0 to Brazil.
Matheson, who is one assist shy of tying the Princeton career record, scored a goal against Uruguay in the tournament and has been a part of Canada's top national team since 2003. Matheson will be competing in her second Women's World Cup this fall in China.
