One Former, One Future Princeton Men's Golfer Qualify for U.S. Amateur Championship
August 10, 2007 | Men's Golf
One former and one future Princeton men's golfer have played their way into the U.S. Amateur Championship, hosted by the USGA at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., Aug. 20-26.
Jason Gerken '06 and Evan Harmeling '11 are among 312 players who qualified through local and sectional tournaments to play in the national event later this month. Gerken will be competing in his third U.S. Amateur while it will be a first for Harmeling.
Gerken qualified at High Lands Golf Club in Pataskala, Ohio, shooting a 5-under 139 over the two rounds to finish third at the site. Harmeling an incoming freshman from North Reading, Mass., qualified at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton, Mass. He shot a 3-under 141 to place second at that location.
"This is terrific news for these two Princetonians and also for our program," Princeton head coach Will Green said.
In San Francisco, the competition will begin Aug. 20 for the first of two days of stroke play. Once that is complete, the top 64 players will compete in a match-play bracket until the winner is decided Aug. 26.
While at Princeton, Gerken was a three-time All-Ivy honoree and the 2004 individual Ivy League champion while helping lead the Tigers to three team titles.
