Four '07 NCAA Tournament Teams to Tangle with Princeton Women's Basketball at Jadwin Gym in 2007-08
August 03, 2007 | Women's Basketball
The Princeton women's basketball team will host four 2007 NCAA tournament teams at Jadwin Gym, including national runnerup Rutgers, and also face 2006 NCAA champion Maryland in the Preseason WNIT as part of a challenging 2007-08 women's basketball schedule announced by first-year head coach Courtney Banghart today.
In addition to the annual matchup with Rutgers, Dec. 12 at Jadwin Gym, the Tigers will also host 2007 NCAA tournament qualifiers California (Dec. 8) and Vanderbilt (Jan. 5). The game with Maryland on the road Nov. 9 is Princeton's season opener and marks the Tigers' first appearance in the Preseason WNIT.
"I'm thrilled to announce the schedule for our upcoming season," Banghart says. "It has a great mix of regional opponents and nationally-recognized powerhouses in addition to the exciting hunt for the league title. We will certainly be challenged hosting top-ranked programs like California, Rutgers and Vanderbilt."
The Tigers are guaranteed three games in the Preseason WNIT, a 16-team bracket that features seven teams that played in the NCAA tournament last season. The dates of Princeton's final two WNIT games, which could potentially be played at Jadwin Gym, will not be known until the outcome of the opening round game. The tournament will conclude for every team by Nov. 18.
"Opening up in the WNIT is a great honor for our program and Maryland will provide an early opportunity to test our toughness. Collectively, these non-conference opponents will prepare us well for the grueling Ivy League race," Banghart says.
The 14-game Ivy League schedule will begin for the Tigers Jan. 12 when Princeton hosts Penn in its only league game before first-semester exams and intersession.
Princeton's first Ivy road game, at Dartmouth Feb. 1, will be a homecoming for Banghart, who played for the Big Green and then was an assistant coach at Dartmouth.
Following the WNIT, and a Nov. 13 game at Wagner, Princeton will begin a stretch of five games against opponents from last year's schedule, hosting Lehigh (Nov. 20), Lafayette (Nov. 24) and Duquesne (Dec. 1) and traveling to St. Francis (Nov. 29) and NJIT (Dec. 5).
Princeton will then host three straight major conference teams in California, Rutgers and another Big East squad, Syracuse, on Dec. 16. Three consecutive non-conference road games will bridge the holiday season with Princeton traveling to Sacred Heart (Dec. 22), Rider (Dec. 29) and Monmouth (Jan. 2).
Vanderbilt's visit to Jadwin Gym Jan. 5 will be the first visit to Princeton since 1984 for a Southeastern Conference school. Commodores coach Melanie Balcomb is a Princeton-area native and Trenton State graduate whose father, Alan, served as an assistant coach at Princeton under Hall of Fame coach Pete Carril.
