Staehely to Pitch for Sweden in European Baseball Championships
August 31, 2007 | Baseball
Senior Christian Staehely, who is spending the fall semester studying abroad in Stockholm, has been added to the roster of the Swedish National Baseball Team and will pitch for the team in the European Baseball Championships this September in Barcelona. Staehely, who was born in Houston, is able to play for Scandinavian country because his mother Angelica hails from Sweden.
Staehely will be one of the starters for Sweden and will also get the chance to bat as the team's designated hitter in games he is not pitching. He is currently slated to start on the mound in the team's opening game on Sept. 8 against Germany. The team is in Pool A along with the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Greece and Croatia. After each team plays each other in a round-robin format, there will be elimination rounds.
The team that wins the tournament will automatically qualify for the eight-team tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, joining China, the United States and Cuba, which have already qualified. The second- and third-place teams will advance to the Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament, where eight teams will compete for three spots. Staehely has a career ERA of 4.40 in 163 innings on the mound for the Tigers. His sophomore season has been his best in the Orange and Black as he went 5-2 with a 2.57 ERA. That season he was also 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA in the Cape Cod League. Staehely capped his sophomore college season when he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of Princeton's second game in the NCAA regionals against Arkansas.
Last season Staehely started eight games and appeared once in relief. He was 0-6 with one save in 45 innings of work. He also played in the Cape Cod Summer League before heading to Sweden.
