Men's Golf to Open Fall Season This Weekend in Minnesota
September 10, 2007 | Men's Golf
PRINCETON -- The Princeton men's golf team will begin its season this weekend in Minnesota as part of a five-tournament fall slate.
Princeton returns six of eight golfers from 2007 but lost John Sawin and Brent Herlihy to graduation. Sawin was the top Tiger in eight of nine tournaments and won the Princeton Invitational.
Sophomore Juan Pablo Candela, who was Princeton's top finisher the one time Sawin wasn't, returns, as do two other members of Princeton's fivesome that competed in the Ivy League Championship, Andrew Maliniak and Max Schechter. Tom Klingman, Jake Skinner and Greg Stamas join Maliniak and Schechter as returners.
Princeton adds two freshmen to the roster in Evan Harmeling and Eric Salazar. Harmeling, from Massachusetts, qualified for the U.S. Amateur championship this year, and Salazar, a talented athlete from California who also played four years of basketball at his high school, played in a U.S. Amateur qualifier.
The inaugural tournament of the fall season, the Gopher Invitational, will take place Saturday and Sunday and feature 54 holes of competition with 36 holes on the first day.
Joining Princeton and host Minnesota at the tournament are Arkansas, Georgia Southern, Illinois, Indiana, Lamar, Michigan State, Notre Dame, San Diego and SMU. Spring Hill Golf Club, whose par-72 course measures 7,020 yards, will host the event.
Princeton is also scheduled to compete in tournaments at Bethpage State Park on Long Island, N.Y., at a Yale-hosted tournament in Connecticut, at the Big Five Classic outside of Philadelphia and at an Old Dominion-hosted event in Kitty Hawk, N.C.
