Shapiro Leads Stanford To 3-1 Men's Soccer Win Over Princeton
September 22, 2007 | Men's Soccer
Dan Shapiro scored his second and third goals of the season and Bobby Warshaw had a goal and an assist to lead the Stanford men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Princeton on the first day of the Stanford Nike Invitational Friday evening at Maloney Field.
Princeton's goal came from freshman Teddy Schneider, who cut the Tiger deficit to 2-1 early in the second half by scoring on a header after Stanford goalie John Moore came off his line to deflect an initial Princeton shot from Max Hare.
Stanford (2-2-2) would respond to the Princeton goal just five minutes later, however, when Warshaw hit a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net after a corner kick from Michael Strickland to make it 3-1.
The Tigers (0-5-0) were making their first-ever trip to the West Coast. Princeton and Stanford played to a scoreless tie at Lourie-Love Field last season.
The Cardinal had gone ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute thanks to Shapiro's first goal of the night. He received a pass from Warshaw, dribbled to the top of the box and sent a shot to the far post to give his team the lead.
Stanford took a 2-0 lead 5:43 into the second half thanks to a rebound of a shot by teammate Tom Montgomery that was saved by Tiger goalie Sean Lynch.
Lynch had five saves while playing all 90 minutes in first career start for the Tigers. Stanford outshot Princeton 16-5, including 8-1 in the first half.
Five freshmen started for the Tigers, including the first career starts for both Lynch and Brandon Busch.
Princeton plays 24th-ranked California Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET on the second day of the Nike Invitational. The Bears defeated Davidson 2-1 in Friday's early game at Maloney Field.
