Disallowed Goal Dooms Princeton In 2-1 Loss To No. 24 Cal In Men's Soccer
September 23, 2007 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team outshot the No. 24 team in the country by more than two to one. One member of the deep freshman class scored for the second straight game on a weekend when he and four classmates were starters.
In the end, these would have to be consolations for the Tigers. Frustrating consolations at that.
No. 24 Cal scored twice and then held off Princeton for a 2-1 win on the second day of the Stanford Nike Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The win wasn't secure until after an apparent tying goal with four minutes remaining by freshman Brandon Busch off a corner kick was waved away by an offsides call.
Cal's Javier Ayala-Hil scored on a free kick with 10 minutes left in the first half for the first score of the game, and the Bears took their 1-0 lead into intermission despite being outshot 12-4 in the first half. Cal then doubled its lead on Tyler's Barry's header six minutes into the second half.
Schneider, who scored his first career goal in a 3-1 loss to Stanford Friday night on the first day of the tournament, got one back for the Tigers five minutes later with a shot into the upper corner. Princeton would get seven shots off in the second half and finished with a 19-9 edge for the game, but the score would not change.
The win improved Cal to 4-2-1, while Princeton fell to a hard-luck 0-6. Princeton plays the first of three straight home games this Thursday when it hosts Monmouth at 7:30 at Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
