Women's Golf Captures Team, Individual Titles at Princeton Invitational
September 23, 2007 | Women's Golf
PRINCETON -- Susannah Aboff held on to her first-round lead and won by two shots at the Princeton Invitational Sunday as the Princeton women's golf team claimed the team title by 11 shots over Ivy defending champion Columbia.
Aboff shot 79 Sunday after posting the tournament's low round of 71 Saturday, but no other player had a round better than 75 on either day as Aboff topped a trio of competitors at +6.
Columbia's Sara Ovadia, Harvard's Jessica Hazlett and Georgetown's Chelsea Curtis shared runner-up status at +8, and the Lions' Stevy Loy took fifth at +9, just ahead of Princeton's second finisher, junior Marlowe Boukis. Shooting 77 both days, Boukis finished at +10.
Freshman Kate Scarpetta continued her impressive debut Sunday, finishing in a seventh-place tie at +11 with a 75 and 80, while senior Annika Welander repeated Saturday's 78 to finish at +12 in a ninth-place tie. Sophomore Michelle Grilli was Princeton's fifth finisher in a 16th place tie after a pair of 79s.
All seven golfers on the Princeton roster competed, with Maggie Boberg and Rachel Blum doing so as individuals. Boberg posted a pair of 84s to tie for 48th and Blum shot a 93 and 92 to tie for 74th.
Aboff, a junior and two-time All-Ivy honoree, has now won two of her last three tournaments as a Tiger. She took the individual title at the Hoya Invitational last spring and followed it up with a third-place finish at the Ivy League Championship. Her individual win helped secure Princeton's fifth straight Princeton Invitational title as the Tigers have never finished lower than second in the event's 11 stagings.
Behind Princeton and Columbia were Harvard, Georgetown, Yale, St. John's, Lehigh, Penn, Siena, Brown, Dartmouth, Sacred Heart, Southwestern (TX), Wagner and Albany. All seven Ivy League programs were in the field.
The Tigers will continue their fall schedule next Sunday and Monday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational.
