September 23, 2007 | Women's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA -- Princeton's three freshman women's tennis players, Sarah Hoffman, Taylor Marable and Rebecca Parks, competed this weekend at the Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by Penn.
In the singles main draw, Hoffman went 1-1 in Friday matches, defeating Maria Martinez of Kansas, 6-4, 6-0, before falling to Penn's Julia Koulbitskya, 6-1, 6-0. In the other half of the draw, Parks won a first-round match over Virginia Tech's Holly Johnson, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Yale's Lauren Ritz, 6-3, 6-4. Marable lost in a first-round match Friday to Penn's Michelle Mitchell, 6-2, 1-6, (10-1).
In the doubles main draw, Parks and Marable received a first-round bye Friday but lost to the Penn duo of Mitchell and Alexa Ely in a tiebreak, 9-8 (9).
Marable found success Friday and Saturday in the consolation singles draw, knocking off Anna Perevezentseva of St. Bonaventure, 6-3, 6-1*, Friday and following it up with a 6-1, 6-0* win over Yale's Lilian Nguyen Saturday. After adding a 6-4, 6-1* victory over Virginia Tech's Chelsea Cramp Saturday, Marable fell in the consolation semifinal to another Hokie, Holly Johnson, 6-4, 6-4.
Marable also teamed up with Parks Saturday to compete in the doubles consolation bracket. The two claimed a walkover win over Kansas' Yuliana Svistun and Mymee Tokuda and went on to defeat Yale's pair of Nguyen and Lindsey Dashiell, 8-2*. Another Bulldog pair, however, Lauren Ritz and Lindsay Clark, were too much, knocking off the Princeton team 8-2.
Parks also competed in a singles "double jeopardy" draw in which she won the two matches she played. The first a come-from-behind win over Virginia Tech's Jessica Brouwer, 6-7 (6), 6-2, (10-8), and the second was in straight sets over Columbia's Natasha Makarova, 6-3, 6-4.
Next on the Princeton schedule is another individual event that is scheduled to include two of Princeton's entrants from this weekend, Marable and Parks. The duo earned a wild card berth into the qualifying bracket for the ITA All-American Championships Oct. 2-3 in Los Angeles, Calif. While Parks is also on the alternate list for a singles prequalifying draw, sophomore Melissa Saiontz is in the singles qualifying draw for the event.
*Results later vacated due to NCAA Committee on Infractions decision.
