Men's Water Polo Opens Season With 15-8 Win
September 07, 2007 | Men's Water Polo
The 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team opened up the 2007 season with a 15-8 win over Fordham on Friday night at DeNunzio Pool. Senior Zach Beckmann led the way with five goals in the win as the Tigers got the season started off on the right foot with a win.
Princeton opened up an early lead and held an advantage throughout the game en route to their first win of the season. In addition to scoring 15 goals, the Tiger defense played strong, as the duo of senior goalkeeper Scott Syverson and sophomore goalie Scottie Hvidt combined to make 15 saves in the game. Syverson made seven in the opening half, while Hvidt blocked eight in the second half.
In addition to Beckmann's offensive contributions, five other Tigers added two goals apiece. Freshmen Jeff Cole and Tommy Parolin both scored twice in their collegiate debuts, while junior Brendan Colgan and sophomore Mark Zalewski and Matt Hudnall all scored twice as well.
“It was a nice effort to start the season,” said Princeton coach Luis Nicolao. “ We played really well for three quarters and were able to get a lot of different guys into the game. We did some things well and need to work on others, but overall it was a good way to start the season.”
