January 28, 2008 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
MADISON, N.J. -- Princeton's men's and women's fencing teams went a combined 9-0 in dual meets at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association event held at Drew University Sunday. The competing teams were a mix of varsity and club squads.
Princeton's men accounted for six of the nine victories. The Tigers topped Lafayette 26-1, Rutgers 19-8, Haverford 23-4, Drew 18-9, Army 17-10 and Cornell 20-7. The women bested Rutgers 19-8, Drew 22-5 and Fairleigh Dickinson 17-1. FDU did not field any foilists, leading to 18 total bouts rather than 27.
On the men's side, the epee was Princeton's most dominant weapon. Tiger men's epeeists won 47 of 54 individual bouts, with sophomore Edward Hurme going 17-1 and his senior brother Tommi Hurme finishing 16-2. Senior Doug Hohensee was Princeton's most successful foilist at 13-2, and sophomore Thomas Abend had the most wins among Princeton men's sabreists at 11-1.
Princeton's women won all eight weapons between the three bouts. Sophomore Chandler Clay had the most epee wins, going 7-2, while freshmen Karen Petsche and Mina Zargham each went 5-1 in epee. Senior Cara DiGirolamo and freshman Caroline Merz each went 8-1 in sabre competition.
The duals were Princeton's last tune-up before the first of two Ivy League competitions. Between Feb. 3 at Yale and Feb. 10 in the Stan Sieja Fencing Room at Princeton's Jadwin Gym, the Tigers will face all their Ivy foes and the league champion will be decided.
