January 29, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
PITTSBURGH -- The Princeton men's hockey team scored twice in each of the first two periods to pull away and defeat Robert Morris 5-2 on Tuesday night at Island Sports Center. The win was Princeton's sixth in a row.
Robert Morris got a few good chances early, but the Tigers struck first when sophomore Mark Magnowski took advantage of a Colonial miscue and deposited the puck in the back of the RMU goal at 14:34. One of the Robert Morris defenseman tried to clear the zone with a pass through the middle, which bounced to the stick of Magnowski, who took a quick shot high to the glove side of Colonial netminder Jim Patterson for his fifth goal of the season.
Princeton made it 2-0 just over two minutes later when sophomore Jody Pederson scored his second goal of the season on the power play. Junior Brett Wilson carried the puck into the zone and cycled around before taking a shot.
Patterson made the initial save, but in the scrum that ensued, Magnowski and sophomore Cam MacIntyre took swipes at the puck, before Pederson eventually knocked the puck over the line to give Princeton a two-goal advantage.
The Colonials cut the lead in half with the first goal of the second period as Chris Margott scored on the power play at 6:09, but Princeton answered with two goals to take a 4-1 lead to the second intermission. Junior Lee Jubinville scored at 8:17 to make it 3-1 in the Tigers' favor when he scored on a rebound from freshman Mike Kramer and Wilson.
Princeton controlled play from that point on and made it a three-goal lead at 15:40 when freshman Matt Arhontas made it 4-1 with his second goal of the season. Freshman Kevin Lohry started the play skating end-to-end along the boards before pulling up and hitting Arhontas with a centering pass. Senior Landis Stankievech also assisted on the goal.
Play leveled out in the third period and Robert Morris cut the lead in half when Brandon Gay scored at 16:34 of the third period, but Lohry capped the scoring in the final minute when he registered his first career goal into an empty net. Arhontas notched an assist on the goal.
Sophomore Zane Kalemba made 25 saves in the Princeton net to register the win.
The win was Princeton's sixth in a row and moved the Tigers to 11-8-0 overall with the win. It is Princeton's first six-game win streak since the 1933-34 season. Princeton is back in league action on Friday at 7 p.m. at Union.
