The Tigers open up at home for the second season in a row. Last season Princeton opened with a single game against Boston College and a league contest with Quinnipiac. Both games ended tied, which is how Princeton's last four season openers have ended. Princeton opened 2004-05 with a tie at Providence, 2005-06 with a tie against Boston College in Buffalo, 2006-07 with a tie at Boston College and 2007-08 at home with a tie against Boston College. Princeton is unbeaten in its last six season openers (2-0-4). Once of those wins was a win at Connecticut to start the 2003-04 season.
Princeton was 14-12-6 a season ago and finished fifth in the ECAC Hockey standings. The Tigers graduated two of their top three point getters and four of their top five goal scorers and will look to new places for scoring this season. In Princeton's exhibition game and scrimmages, the Tigers got balanced scoring as their eight goals came from seven scorers, including three freshmen.
Princeton's first taste of competitive action came last Friday with a 5-4 overtime win over the Bluewater Hawks. Princeton raced to a 3-0 lead, but its Canadian opponent rallied in the final period before junior Stephanie Denino scored in the extra session for the win. Senior Katherine Dineen, junior Julie Flynn and freshmen Paula Romanchuk and Danielle DiCesare also scored in the game. A day later the Tigers played two 40 minute scrimmages against Brown and Yale. The game with Brown was a 0-0 tie and Princeton edged Yale 3-2 with goals from junior Melanie Wallace, freshman Charissa Stadnyk and Flynn.
The Tigers open the weekend against Connecticut unbeaten in seven previous meetings with the Huskies. Princeton is 7-0-2 against UConn and is 3-0-0 in its home building in the series. The last two games between the teams have all gone to overtime and ended in ties. The teams tied 0-0 and 1-1 in a series in early January of 2008. Princeton senior goaltender Kristen Young stopped 31 of 32 shots in the two-game series.
UConn enters the weekend with eight games already under its belt. The Huskies opened on Sept. 27 with a win over Sacred Heart and have played each weekend since. Connecticut split a series at Minnesota State, then defeated Colgate, tied St. Lawrence and New Hampshire, beat Vermont and fell to Northeastern. UConn's Dominique Thibault has 10 goals in the first eight games and leads the team with 13 points.
