Harvard Records 2-0 Win Over Princeton in Men's Soccer
October 25, 2008 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/25/08) – The Harvard men's soccer team ended Princeton's two-game win streak, taking a 2-0 game on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
The first chance in the game came three minutes into the game, when Princeton's Ben Harms had a shot sail just above the cross bar.
Harvard's first opportunity in its attacking zone resulted in its first goal. Andre Akpan brought the ball up the center of the field and passed it off to Michael Fucito at the left corner of the goal box. Fucito saw Adam Rousmaniere running up the right flank, and crossed the ball, and Rousmaniere blasted it into the near corner of the net at 32:45.
John Stamatis had a close-range shot blocked by Princeton's Danny Steiner in the 21st minute, but he redeemed himself with a goal at 40:55 when he knocked in a pass from Brian Grimm. Grimm, on the right flank, sent the ball into the box where Stamatis buried it.
Shots were somewhat even at the close of the first period, 6-5, with each team taking two corner kicks.
In the 62nd minute, Grimm lined up for a free kick following a Princeton yellow card. He launched the ball in on goal, but senior Joe Walter punched it up. The ball fell back down right out in front of the goal and it bounced around. Kwaku Nyamekye was trying to notch the third goal, but two Princeton defenders were able to knock the ball out of the goal box but Harvard would retain possession.
There was a close call in the 82nd minute when Marcel Perl delivered a great ball to Akpan who was right on the doorstep but it went just high. Seconds later Harvard had back-to-back corners, with the second going right into the box where Walter collected a header by Nyamekye.
Walter made another sliding grab with just three minutes to play when Akpan was all alone inside the 18-yard box but his early shot was scooped up by Walter who came out to grab it.
Walter made five saves, while Harvard's Austin Harms stopped one.
Harvard finished the game with a 15-9 shot advantage, while Princeton led the way in corners, 7-4.
Princeton is now 4-9-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in the Ivy League. Harvard improves to 8-3 and 4-0 in the league.
The Tigers will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to face Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 4:30 p.mm.
