October 31, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE -- Junior Mark Magnowski had two goals and an assist to lead the 10th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 4-1 win at Brown in its season opener on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Princeton went ahead at 11:36 of the first period when Brett Wilson scored a power-play as he tipped junior Brad Schroeder's point shot. Sophomore Matt Godlewski also assisted on the goal. The lead however, did not last long, as Brown's Ryan Garbutt countered 1:10 later when he scored on the power-play immediately off a Devin Timberlake face-off win.
Princeton put the game away midway through the second period with two goals in a 1:50 span. Magnowski tallied the game winner at 8:03 on the power play with assists from sophomore Cam Ritchie and Godlewski. Magnowski scored the puck from his stomach on the third of a series of rebounds. The two assists credited to Godlewski marked the first multiple-point game of his collegiate career.
Reigning ECAC and Ivy League Player of the Year Lee Jubinville put Princeton ahead 3-1 at 10:53 of the period with assists from Magnowski and sophomore Mike Kramer as Princeton pressured the Brown zone for an extended period of time. Magnowski closed out the scoring with his second of the night 5:35 into the third period to seal the win for Princeton by lifting the puck into the goal. Sophomore Sam Sabky and freshman Brodie Zuk had the helpers on the goal, the first collegiate points for both players coming in their first collegiate game. Magnowski's three points matches a career high. He had three points in a win at Nebraska-Omaha last season.
Princeton opened the season with a win for the second season in a row and is 3-0-1 in its last four season-opening games. The Tigers also claimed their fifth straight win over Brown.
Princeton outshot Brown 38-13 and was 2 for 8 on the power play, while Brown was 1 for 2. Junior goaltender Zane Kalemba stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced for the win, while Dan Rosen stopped 34 shots in a losing effort.
Princeton is now 1-0-0 overall this season. The win does not count towards the ECAC Hockey standings. Princeton will complete its weekend at the Showdown at Meehan tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. with an exhibition contest against the Ontario Institute of Technology.
