October 04, 2008 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/4/08) – The Princeton University men's soccer team opened up Ivy League play with a 1-1 tie with Dartmouth College on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
One of Princeton's best opportunities came 13 minutes into the game. Sophomore Teddy Schneider took a corner kick and sent the ball into the crowd in the box. The ball was batted around before sophomore Tim Sedwitz, who had just checked into the game, headed the ball towards the goal. Dartmouth's goalkeeper, Sean Milligan, standing at 6-5, leaped to grab the ball and keep the game scoreless.
Junior Ben Harms had a great opportunity when he split his two defenders on the way to the net and released a cross, but Milligan came out to stop the ball in its tracks.
Dartmouth took the lead at 21:23 when Craig Henderson headed in an Aaron Gaide cross.
Just before the close of the first half, Dartmouth was called for a handball in the middle of field about 20 yards from the goal. Sophomore Josh Walburn set up to take the free kick and sent a low shot through the Big Green wall and to the right side of Milligan to even the game at one apiece at 44:15.
The second half was played evenly as well, with Princeton taking four shots, to Dartmouth three. Regulation ended with shots even at eight each.
In the first five minutes of the first overtime showcased a lot of midfield play. At 3:45, Dartmouth nearly ended the game when Princeton goalkeeper Joe Walter came out to grab a free kick but the ball got knocked down on the field and was swatted around before the Princeton defense kicked it away.
Seven minutes into the second overtime period, a foul was called on Princeton setting Dartmouth up for a free kick from 35 yards out. The ball sailed high and came down right near the goal but Walter made the save to keep the score even. Less than a minute later, Walter made another diving stop but the ball skidded to the right, hit the post, but the Princeton defense cleared it away from the box to prevent another chance for the Big Green.
Freshman Antoine Hoppenot had the crowd of over 2,000 on its feet with just 1:30 to play when he got by one defender in the attacking third, but struggled to get a shot off.
Walter finished the night with seven saves, while Milligan made two stops.
Dartmouth had a 14-8 advantage in shots, and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
Princeton is now 2-6-1 overall, and 0-0-1 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth moves to 5-2-1, and 0-0-1 in the league.
The Tigers will play a non-conference game at Adelphi on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
