Wrestlers Open Season At 2008 Brute Binghamton Open
November 15, 2008 | Wrestling
Princeton wrestling coach Chris Ayres sent 11 Tigers to the Brute Binghamton Open Saturday in the season-opening tournament of the 2008-09 Tiger wrestling season. Although none won a weight class in a strong field, which included fourth-ranked Cornell, there were several wrestlers who picked up multiple wins. Full brackets are available here.
Both Danny Scotton (141) and Travis Erdman (174) won championship bracket matches; Scotton defeated J.C. Bandeiro of Middlesex County before losing to 141-pound finalist Walter Peppelman of Harvard. Erdman, a 2008 All-Ivy selection, won two matches at 174, and both came by fall. He pinned Victor Stanziale of Springfield in the second period, then topped Nathan Reese of Shippensburg in 1:06. He fell to Peter Capone, who would go on to take third.
Captain Marty Everin had the unenviable task of opening the 165-pound weight class against Rutgers freshman Scott Winston, one of the premier recruits in the nation and a three-time New Jersey state champion. Everin lost the match 9-6 to Winston, who would lose only to 2008 NCAA champion Jordan Leen of Cornell during the day; in Winston's five wins, nobody kept the match closer than Everin.
Michael Alvarez also suffered an early loss in the championship draw at 165 pounds, but he battled back for two wins in the consolation draw; the first was by one point, and the second came on a sudden-death takedown.
