Colgan Named Southern Player of the Year
November 21, 2008 | Men's Water Polo
Senior Brendan Colgan was named the Southern Player of the Year and the Princeton men's water polo team placed four on the All-Southern teams, as was announced on Friday night at the CWPA banquet in conjunction with the Eastern Championships.
Colgan received Player of the Year honors and was a first-team All-South selection. He is Princeton's fifth Southern MVP and the first since John Stover in 2004. Colgan has 39 goals this season to tie for the team lead in scoring after contributing four in today's win over MIT in the opening round of Easterns. Colgan was also a first-team choice as a sophomore.
Sophomores Jeff Cole and Mike Merlone joined Colgan on the first team. Cole is tied with Colgan atop the team in scoring, while Merlone has made 210 saves in 21 games this season in the Tiger cage.
Junior Eric Vreeland was named second-team All-South. The southpaw was also a second-team selection as a sophomore and has 38 goals this year to rank just behind Cole and Colgan.
In addition to the player recognitions, head coach Luis Nicolao was named the Southern Coach of the Year for third time in his career. He also won it in 2001 and 2003 and is a four-time Southern Coach of the Year on the women's side.
