#22 Men's Swim/Dive Team Sweeps Penn, Cornell In Ivy Openers
November 22, 2008 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Senior Doug Lennox won three individual events to lead the 22nd-ranked Princeton men's swimming and diving team to a pair of wins during its Ivy League opener Saturday at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton defeated Penn 175-125 and Cornell 194-106; Penn picked up a 189-111 win over the Big Red.
Princeton opened the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay; the team of A.J. Kennedy, Easton Chen, Dan Eckel and Matt Lamonaca finished in 1:35.18. Senior tri-captain Robert Griest gave Princeton its first win in the opening individual event, the 1000 free. One of the league's premier distance swimmers over the last three years, Griest finished in 9:14.74 to win the event by more than 1.5 seconds.
Jon Hartmann lost a tight 200 free final to Penn's James Fee, with Hartmann finishing in 1:39.33. Princeton would get right back to winning in the 100 back when tri-captain and 2008 Olympian Doug Lennox finished in 49.26. Teammate Charley Wang took third in 51.05.
Following a third-place finish by Jon Christensen in the 100 breast (56.53), Princeton's Dan Eckel picked up a win in the 200 fly in 1:48.24. That time was more than three seconds faster than the rest of the field.
Penn's Chris Buck edged out Princeton sophomore Geoff Faux by .14 of a second to win the 50 free (20.71/20.85), but once again, a Princeton competitor would make sure the momentum would be short-lived. Junior Dan Dickerson won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 305.95, and Lennox followed by winning the 100 free in 44.14. His time beat out senior teammate Michael Carter, who took second in 45.19.
Cornell picked up its first win when Phil Baity won the 200 back in 1:49.45, but the Princeton depth made sure the event would still be productive for the home squad. Colin Hanna (1:49.81), Colin Cordes (1:50.09) and Kennedy (1:50.18) took second, third and fourth to score big points for the Tigers.
Christensen finished third again in the 200 breast (2:03.10), and teammate Travis McNamara followed with a win in the 500 (4:26.54). Lennox made it a 3-for-3 night by claiming the 100 fly in 47.78, and Dickerson followed with a second-place finish in the one-meter competition with 257.60 points.
The third of Princeton's tri-captains, Will Schaffer, grabbed an exciting win in the final individual event of the day, the 200 IM. His time of 1:50.21 edged out Penn's Brendan McHugh by .07 of a second. The meet ended with Princeton winning the 400 free relay; the team of Cordes, Carter, Hartmann and Lennox finished in 3:01.98, more than a second faster than Penn's top team.
